The Great Outdoors Gun Shop
Meet the staff.
Jim Engel is the manager of the gun shop with prior law enforcement and emergency management experience. He is a 1994 graduate of the Trinidad State Junior College gunsmithing program.
Richard Howland is the owner of SRB Field Rests and is a part time salesman. He is a retired Line Construction Foreman.
Cherie Hayes takes care of all receiving and book keeping that the gun shop requires. She has prior experience as a business owner and substantial book keeping skills.
The Great Outdoors Gun Shop is conveniently located near the intersection of Hwy 25 and Hwy 36, on the NW corner of Atwood Kansas. There is front parking for passenger vehicles and semi trucks can park to the east of the shop on 2nd Street. There are no parking signs on Hwy 36 in front of the gun shop. Atwood has a rich heritage of outdoor related companies such as Carlson Choke Tubes, SRB Field Rests and Bell and Carlson gun stocks started in Atwood. Atwood is also home to some large companies such as Beaver Valley Supply Co Inc, SurePoint Ag and JD Skiles.

History
The Great Outdoors Gun Shop was started after our local gun shop, Northwest Arms and Service, decided to end retail sales to customers in late 2007. The owners of Beaver Valley Supply Co Inc of Atwood thought they would start their own gun shop. Jim Engel was hired away from Thomas County Emergency Management in January 2008. Our building was acquired in April and the FFL was granted at the same time. Local craftsman Les McCain and Bernie Horinek made most of the shelving and cabinets before opening day on May 1st 2008. A new office and storage addition was added on during the summer of 2015. We currently utilize about 9 different distributors and are direct with several companies to try to get customers what they want.
